About Us
History
Rabun County was created from
Cherokee lands by the Georgia Legislature on December 21, 1819, and named for
William Rabun, who served as Governor of Georgia from 1817 to 1819.
Rabun County has 236,160 acres (377 square
miles). Of this land, approximately 60% is US Forest Service land and 10%
belongs to Georgia Power Company. A county slogan - "Where Spring Spends the
Summer" - is fitting, as the average temperature ranges from 58.7º F in January
to approximately 76º F in August. Annual rainfall exceeds 70 inches, accounting
for the lush, green forests and many wild flowers. Laurel blooms along creek
banks, in coves, on cliffs and on hilltops in May and June. Rhododendron blooms
in July. In October, the mountains take on a profusion of colors as the leaves
begin to fall, foretelling the coming of winter.

If you've never stayed in a
mountain cabin by the lake, this wonderful poem will describe what it's like.
Alone with
touch of heaven
In nature's life we share
A moment of God's blessing
So beautifully aware
Grass so tall with splendor
Sky so blue and clear
Within the heart we nurture
This beauty we revere
Place we fill with laughter
Love we share with peace
A lifetime spent with moments
Are treasures that we keep
Hear the silent whispers
In breezes that will flow
Keep the fire's burning
For love that has life's glow.

A little history of the Log
Cabin...
The log cabin was introduced to
America in the 1770’s by Swedish and Finland Immigrants. These Immigrants
brought their skills of building log cabins to Delaware but it soon spread all
across America. Log cabins became very popular in the 1880’s. In fact Abraham
Lincoln and Andrew Jackson gained popular advantage just because they were born
in a log cabin. Also presidential candidate William Henry Harrison used the log
cabin as a campaign symbol. The log cabin was extremely important. Just think of
how many people in America used log cabins for something. Weather it was
someone's home or someone's church everyone had a use for them.
The
frontier style log cabin:
- used no
nails
-
contained only one room
- was only
10 feet wide
- measured
12 to 20 feet long
- had at
least one glass window
- included
a loft area for sleeping
